Capsule wardrobe: the seasonal essentials
How to build a wardrobe from a handful of pieces that work together and cover most occasions — without unnecessary purchases.
A capsule wardrobe is a small set of pieces that work together and yield plenty of ready-made looks from just a few items. The point isn't to buy less for the sake of saving money, but to make every piece work with the rest, so getting dressed takes no lingering at the wardrobe.
The principle: fewer pieces, more looks
A capsule is built on combinability. If ten items mix freely with one another, they add up to several dozen looks. That's why the foundation is a calm palette and simple silhouettes, with bold or elaborate pieces added sparingly.
The seasonal essentials
A handy starting point is two bottoms, three or four tops, one or two outer layers and a couple of pairs of shoes:
Bottoms. Straight trousers in a neutral colour and jeans — the base that goes with almost any top.
Tops. Two or three basic roll-necks or T-shirts and one jumper for cooler days.
Dress. One understated dress covers both everyday and going out — just change the shoes and accessories.
Outer layer. A jacket or coat in keeping with the palette — it pulls the look together rather than fighting it.
Palette
To make pieces combine effortlessly, keep to 2–3 base colours (black, grey, beige or white) and one accent. A monochrome foundation forgives mistakes: almost any combination looks put together.
How to build your own
Start with what you wear most often and fill in the missing pairings. If a piece doesn't go with at least three others, it will most likely drop out of rotation. A capsule is easy to assemble from the women's or men's sections, leaning on a calm base and adding a seasonal outer layer.
